Frequently Asked questions

KNOW YOUR SYSTEM

Absolutely, city water contains high amounts of chlorine. Legally, water treatment centers must use chlorine to disinfect the water before it reaches your home. REN Water's Carbon filter will remove odors, tastes, and reduce chlorine from your water. We highly recommend adding filters to your home to protect your family and your valuable possessions.

All our systems are engineered to handle houses with up 16 GPM (Gallons Per Minute). This is perfect for residential applications as the average water usage is 6-12 GPM (Gallons Per Minute)

There is very little maintenance required for our systems. We don't require preset backwashing times, or any drainage setup with our systems. We don't require you to wait 48 hours for media to soak when install or replace media.

Once a year take 10 minutes out of your day and replace the filter cartridge. No plumber needed!

*We recommend signing up and saving 10% with our Auto-Ship program.

All of REN Water's products are designed to be an easy, simple DIY installation. Take a look at our installation guides/videos to see it step by step. However, should you choose to bring a plumber we totally understand!

We recommended purchasing one of our water test kits and testing your water at certified water testing location near you. Since the magnesium and calcium stays inside your water with a salt-free filter a water test will not gauge the systems effectiveness. Instead inspect your faucets and plumbing to see the benefits.

No problems, our systems are easy uninstalland easy to install. Simply, disconnect your water and remove the connections and re-install your system in to your new home!

REN Water's Modern Filtration Solutions are designed to provide you with clean, pure water without water pressure drops, complex maintenance, and visually appealing systems.

This Activated Carbon filtration system works by removing contaminants in a two-stage process. First our 5-Micron Sediment filter removes all kinds of debris all the way down to 5-microns. This pre-filter allows our next stage filter to work as efficient as possible. Second, our Activated Carbon filter works efficiently at removing chlorine, tastes, and odors.

UV Protection

Our UV Purification system works by using ultraviolet light to disinfect and sterilize any pathogens, or bacteria present in your water supply. The lamp emits strong rays of ultraviolet light into the incoming water. Any incoming bacteria that encounters this light will be neutralized.

No, exposure to UV light is not a concern. Our system is designed with a fully enclosed sleeve and steel casing, ensuring that even being in close proximity to the system poses no harm.

Certainly! We highly recommend our UV filter for customers looking to enhance their filtration system. It can seamlessly integrate with your existing setup at any time.

UV water treatment systems efficiently deactivate microorganisms, thereby reducing the risk of contracting illnesses. UV light disrupts and neutralizes waterborne pathogens, preventing their reproduction. The benefits of UV water treatment are numerous, including:

  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Maintaining the taste and odor of water
  • Easy maintenance
  • Absence of disinfection by-products
  • Reduction in plastic bottle usage
  • Environmental friendliness
  • Lack of moving parts susceptible to wear and tear
  • Compact designs suitable for various spaces
  • Elimination of the need for additional chemicals

Step 1: Pre-treated water enters the stainless steel chamber, circulating around the UV lamp.

Step 2: The waterborne microbes are exposed to ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 254nm. This light alters their DNA, rendering them unable to replicate, thus rendering them harmless.

Step 3: The treated water exits the chamber and enters your home's water supply. Now safe for drinking, bathing, and use in food production.

UV treatment effectiveness can be impacted by various barriers. These include suspended solids, visible and non-visible particulate matter (turbidity), and scaling caused by physical deposits like iron, manganese, or calcium carbonate on the quartz sleeve.

Additionally, UV absorbing compounds, often from dissolved substances like certain organic (humic or fumic acids) or inorganic (iron and manganese) materials, can reduce the chamber's effectiveness. It's crucial to address these contaminants before UV treatment to ensure its efficacy.

UV treatment is typically not used alone but is accompanied by other water treatment processes.

No, UV disinfection is a physical process, not a chemical one. It doesn't change the water chemistry, so it won't impact the taste or odor of your water. UV treatment specifically targets microbiological concerns.

Compared to other disinfection systems, UV systems are not expensive to operate and maintain. With regular pre-treatment and an annual system check-up along with lamp replacement, maintenance is minimal. Additionally, since most UV systems are designed for continuous operation, their energy consumption is comparable to that of a 40-watt light bulb in a typical household.

While "UV" often brings to mind the sun's harmful rays, it's been employed for water treatment for over a century. The French first utilized UV in 1906, and in the last two decades, it has gained widespread acceptance in residential, commercial, and municipal sectors. Nowadays, UV is often the primary choice for addressing microbiological concerns in drinking water.

UV light affects various microorganisms to varying degrees. Whether it's bacteria, viruses, algae, protozoan cysts, spores, or mold, exposure to UV rays can damage these organisms. The effectiveness of UV treatment depends on the specific organism and the level of UV dose it requires to inhibit cell replication. For instance, viruses often demand high UV doses for disinfection. Therefore, when considering a UV system, it's crucial to ensure it can deliver sufficient UV dose even at the end of the lamp's life to effectively disinfect against the typical range of microorganisms found in drinking water.

Yes, While installing a UV system is a proactive step towards safeguarding your family from bacteriological contaminants, it's crucial to maintain vigilance by regularly testing your water. Even with UV protection in place, periodic testing every six months provides an added layer of assurance, ensuring that your system operates effectively for your peace of mind.

Whether you should install a UV system depends on your level of confidence. While most municipalities provide bacteriologically safe water, monitored closely by regulatory bodies, instances of unsafe water distribution have occurred globally. In such cases, municipalities inform residents of water safety concerns and suggest alternative sources. A UV system in your home serves as "insurance for your water supply." The decision to invest in this level of assurance is personal, but given the vital role of water in life, it offers a relatively inexpensive way to secure the health of you and your family.

A Boil Water Alert (BWA) will be issued by your municipal water provider if the municipal water being provided to your home or business is deemed to be unfit for human consumption. This may be the result of a number of circumstances, however the municipality is informing their customers that at this point-in-time, the water is not safe for drinking, unless treated by some other method such as physically boiling the water for a minimum of 1 minute at a rapid boil. Depending on the exact nature of the BWA, other precautions may need to be taking such as avoiding baths or showers (especially in water ingestion is possible). The municipality will advise when the BWA is over and how to ensure your home's water supply is made safe.

If permitted by your local state or provincial regulations, installing a residential UV system can be undertaken by a skilled handyman. The typical installation process involves tapping into the cold water supply and fitting the UV unit with unions and suitable fittings. Once installed, the unit is plugged into a dedicated GFCI outlet. For more comprehensive installation instructions, please consult one of the installation manuals available on this site.

You might not drink water directly from the bathroom tap, but what if guests or visitors assume it's safe for consumption? And where do you brush your teeth? If it's in the bathroom, ensuring the water there is treated is crucial. You don't have to swallow contaminated water to be at risk of harmful organisms; even brushing against sore or bleeding gums can pose risks. That's why it's highly advisable to install a whole-home POE system whenever feasible.

Yes, while UV is highly effective at addressing microbiological issues, it can face challenges due to other water chemistry issues. Key concerns for UV treatment include water hardness, tannins, turbidity, iron, manganese, and UV transmittance. It's recommended that water hardness be below 7 grains per gallon (gpg), tannin levels should be less than 0.1 parts per million (ppm) or 0.1 milligrams per liter (mg/l), turbidity should be less than 1 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU), iron levels should be below 0.3 ppm, and manganese levels should be less than 0.05 ppm. While UV can still work with UV transmittance levels below 75%, it's preferable for residential applications to have UV transmittance greater than 75%.

These issues can be addressed using other water treatment equipment like filters and water softeners, many of which are available on this site. The minimum recommended pre-treatment is the installation of a 5-micron prefilter ahead of the UV system. You can find these systems in the filtration section of this site.

Ensure your water undergoes comprehensive testing for its basic chemistry before installing a UV system. Essential tests cover hardness, tannins, turbidity, iron, manganese, and UV transmittance. You can typically arrange these tests through our certified partnered laboratory HealthGuard Labs.

UV lamps undergo aging similar to standard fluorescent lamps. REN Water's low-pressure (LP) and low-pressure, high-output (LP-HO) lamps have a rated service life of 9,000 hours, equivalent to about one year of continuous use. Our commercial/industrial and municipal lines feature amalgam lamps with a rated service life of 12,000 hours. We guarantee all our lamps to last a minimum of one year.

It's important to note that the visible bluish glow from a low-pressure mercury vapor lamp is actually from the mercury vapor, not the UV energy responsible for disinfection. Therefore, a lamp emitting this glow may not necessarily provide sufficient UV energy for disinfection. It's crucial to change the lamps as recommended by the manufacturer. Some LUMINOR models include an integral lamp change reminder to alert users when it's time for a UV lamp replacement.

Yes, the installation of a bypass valve is highly recommended in order to allow water flow in case the UV system has to be removed for some reason. Please note that notification should be provided, and posted, at each location where water is drawn to ensure that no one accidently consumes contaminated water. When the system is put back online, a full chemical disinfection must be made on the distribution system.

No, all REN Water UV systems are designed to minimize pressure drop for each specific flow rate of every model. Typically, pressure drops are less than 3 psi.

While the orientation of the reactor chamber does not affect disinfection performance due to its self-contained pressurized design, for easier installation and service, it's recommended to install the UV system in a vertical orientation with the retaining lamp (and lamp removal) positioned at the top.

To ensure that the UV system does not surpass the manufacturer's rated flow, it is advisable to install a flow restrictor. These restrictors feature a variable orifice that adjusts with changes in water pressure, controlling the maximum flow. Ideally, the restrictor should be installed on the outlet port of the UV reactor. Flow restrictors are available for purchase through your local plumbing supply distributor.

No, UV systems are intended for indoor installation and should be kept away from outdoor elements. If installed outside or exposed to water spraying or splashing, the manufacturer's warranty may not apply.

For replacement UV system components, you can contact us at 800-240-5574 or visit our website and order your replacement parts.

The UV lamp should be disposed of following your local regulations. It should be treated like any other fluorescent light fixture in your home or office. At REN Water, we highly recommend recycling. For further details, please visit www.recycle.org.
